Monday Morning Quarterbacking on the Private Practice Workshop

This is now the tenth year that I have been offering the Starting a Professional Private Practice workshop, and as usual, I come away energized and excited about sharing information and ideas. The workshop is usually attended by OTs PTs and STs, often evenly divided, and this was no exception. In addition, we had our typical family partnerships; this conference featured two mother-daughter teams and one husband-wife team.
In addition to local NYC therapists, we had therapists travel up from North Carolina, South Jersey, upstate NY and Long Island, which always helps me prove two of my points:

(1) What we have in common always far outweighs our differences.

(2) We do not operate in a vacuum so hearing experiences from therapists in other states can only help us all prepare for what we might have to deal with some day.

CASE IN POINT: THE RECENT SLASH IN EI FEES IN NYS – If NY therapists were shocked, caught off guard or not preparing strategically for this, you need to get out of your bubble. Therapists all across the country have already had to deal with decreased fees, and cuts in program entitlements for years now, so it was only a matter of time before NY followed suit. TRENDS roll across the country, they are not provincial – it took managed care 10 years to come from California to NY, but it got here.

I want to thank all the participants of the workshop, lawyer Chris Krimitsos, who helped to make the topic of legal structures a professional practice can take into an interesting and dynamic conversation, and our sponsor, InTouch Practice Management Systems, who gave a great in -service about their product. And of course to the attendees, your energy, enthusiasm, willingness to share, and good questions is really what makes the course as dynamic and interesting as I think it is.

On a personal note, it was great to now be able to take Health Care reform out of the trend column, and begin to discuss what impacts I think it will have on the future of all private practices.
Thanks again to everyone, and stay tuned!
