Accountant I

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Accountant I performs varied and complex technical accounting work, prepares analytical, narrative, statistical and accounting reports. The Accountant I is a skilled and the experienced level of accounting position. Works independently without technical supervision. Maintains financial records by reviewing and approving vouchers, warrants, purchase orders, requisitions and similar financial documents.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE: Following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

1. Keeps fiscal records with varied accounting functions. Examines, verifies, approves and screens fiscal documents such as requisitions, purchase orders, receiving records and invoice record transactions in subsidiary and general ledgers. Prepares trial balances, reconciliations and worksheets.

2. May supervise a clerical staff making ledger entries, reconciliations and trial balances, maintaining payroll records and performing other fiscal record keeping work. Assigns and reviews clerical work. Trains new employees and evaluates performance and makes recommendations on personnel matters.

4. Prepares a variety of detailed factual and analytical accounting, statistical and narrative reports for the department.

5. Prepares daily cash summary of cash receipts; classifies receipts according to funds; collects, disburses and maintains records for claims and miscellaneous revenues and accounts.

6. Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Required Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in accounting, finance or other closely related field.

Required Experience: One (1) to two years of full-time professional accounting experience.
