POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a dedicated Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our Trauma Surgery, Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care team. The PA or NP will work under the supervision of trauma and critical care surgeons to provide comprehensive care to acutely ill and injured patients.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Responsible for all aspects of patient care for trauma and surgical critical care patients, including:
- Obtaining pertinent medical history, performing physical examinations, and evaluating patient status
- Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, such as lab work, imaging studies, etc.
- Diagnosing illnesses or injury, developing treatment plans with collaborating physician
- Prescribing medications and other treatment plans
- Communicating plan and following up with nursing staff, consulting services, and attending physician throughout the day.
- Perform basic bedside procedures such as chest tube placement, central line placement, arterial line placement, and laceration repairs.
- Responds to trauma activations in the Emergency Department and assists with ATLS resuscitation.
- Evaluates trauma consultations in the Emergency Department and develops plan in conjunction with trauma surgeon on call. Communicates plan to Emergency Department physician(s) and staff.
- Documents progress notes, H&Ps, all assessment data, orders, interventions, results, evaluation, and discharge summaries within the patient's medical record in a timely manner.
- Participates in team meetings, process improvement meetings, and other pertinent care meetings.
- Supports the Trauma Registry by including the documentation of requisite data elements for the NTDB (National Trauma Data Bank), Michigan TQIP (Trauma Quality Improvement Program), TQIP, and other trauma data repositories. Examples include injury descriptions, complications, and the timing of events, consults, and referrals. Is familiar with the Trinity Health Livonia trauma and surgical care quality metrics and PI initiatives.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree in Medicine as Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.
- Current Michigan License as Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.
- Current BLS-C and ACLS provider status.
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) provider status within six months of hire.
- Fundamental of Critical Care Certification within one year of hire.
- Demonstrates continuity within the team, attention to detail, and flexibility.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Must be self-motivated, self-directed, detail-oriented, and demonstrate initiative; must be able to work with minimal supervision.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to initiate and maintain collegial relationships with coworkers and therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Analytic skills necessary to perform principal duties and responsibilities of job description.
- Demonstrated ability working in often stressful environment with patients/families at various ages and levels of understanding.
- Demonstrated ability for efficient time management and handling multiple priority activities at once. Demonstrated ability responding appropriately to life-threatening situations.
- Ability to walk and stand continuously for 50% of time, ability to sit for 50% of time.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two years experience as a PA or NP.
- Two years of Trauma/ICU experience.
- Current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) provider status.
