The Biochemistry and Ultra-High Throughput Mass Spectrometry group within the Quantitative Biosciences Department is seeking a highly motivated and experienced candidate to fill the position of Associate Principal Scientist in Kenilworth NJ. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team driving early discovery programs for oncology, neuroscience, cardiovascular, and infectious disease areas. The ideal candidate will be adept in biochemical assay systems and have experience in the application of mass spectrometry to these assays. Experience with developing methods using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) or electrospray ionization (ESI) techniques is required. Your role will be a complement and core resource to synergize with existing capabilities and will serve as a means to expand our ability to interrogate and identify new chemical matter to help drive our discovery programs. You will have the opportunity to work independently and to proactively collaborate with colleagues in SCP, Quantitative Biosciences, Discovery Chemistry, IT, and across therapeutic area disciplines.
The successful candidate will join our team of experienced and accomplished colleagues, and will have the following responsibilities:
Independently develop assays to characterize enzyme activity in a biochemical context (e.g., determine substrate KM, Vmax, linearity) and validate these following NIH guidelines for high-throughput screening.
Utilize state of the art (ultra)high-throughput MS capabilities (including Echo-MS and MALDI-MS) to measure enzyme and cellular pathway activity for the purpose of high-throughput screening.
Develop sensitive and specific mass spectrometry methods for the quantitative analysis of a diverse range of analytes (small molecules, lipids, peptides, and proteins) from a variety of samples, with the emphasis on biochemical and cell-based assays.
Act as liaison on projects between research sites (NJ, PA, MA & CA).
Contribute to a strong, external scientific reputation for the department through publications and presentations at scientific conferences.
Post-graduate degree in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Analytical Chemistry, or other relevant fields are welcome to apply:
Ph.D. +/- relevant postdoctoral experience, with 3 or more years of industry related experience
M.Sc. with 10+ years of job experience in a relevant academic (e.g., core lab) or industrial setting
Proven experience and knowledge in biochemistry, enzymology, assay development, and/or mechanism of action studies is required.
Proven expertise in quantitative analysis using mass spectrometry on samples of biological origin (recombinant enzyme systems, cell media and/or lysate, plasma, serum, tissue or other biofluids).
Hands-on proficiency developing methods using electrospray ionization (ESI) or matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) techniques is required. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in both approaches.
Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve problems with MS instrumentation (triple quadrupole, (Q-)ToF and/or orbitrap systems).
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Proven track record of impactful research & communication, evidenced through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific symposia.
