Title: Bioinformatics Scientist

Role & Responsibilities:
- Provides programming and troubleshooting support to the Federal Government in the dissemination of research data.
- Performs computations on research data analysis.
- Works with staff on scientific programming and experimental design.
- Records observations and report results at weekly laboratory meetings.
- Provides statistical support / analysis on research data.
- Provides research / service goals in the context of the laboratory's overall mission.
- Evaluates new types of experimental approaches to protocols based on knowledge of scientific literature, available facilities and research needs.
- Independently coordinates the training of personnel in the use of scientific software applications, statistical software applications and programmatic software applications.
- Initiates interdisciplinary collaborations with other research centers.
- Deliver at least one presentation per year to audiences outside the Government.
- Conduct analyses on NextGen sequencing data including data derived in ChIP-Seq, RNA-Seq, miRNA-Seq and other experimental models
- Conduct analysis and interpretation on data from genomic platforms including expression, exon, tiling, promoter and others array types
- Conduct data analysis and interpretation on other large data types in genomic context
- Establish and maintain workflows including experimental design, analyses of data quality, genome and meta-genome integration and others
- Write utility scripts, macros and/or custom programs or algorithms in support of biological discovery
- Coordinate with biologists and/or other bioinformaticians in the design of models summarizing and explaining experimental data; provide interpretive analyses of data derived from different experimental platforms to generate biological meaning
- Prepare reports and publication quality graphics summarizing experimental data including providing written documents.
- Participate in meetings with biologists; present findings to individuals and groups.
- Develop work products and documentation related to applying advanced computational and data analysis approaches to generate biological insights. Independently design analytical strategies; identify and resolve scientific or technical challenges; design studies; analyze and interpret high-throughput biological data; and prepare and present results. - Ad-Hoc
- Develop work products and documentation supporting integrative analysis of internally generated datasets. Contribute to manuscript preparation by drafting data analysis sections, creating publication-quality figures, and facilitating data submission to appropriate external repositories. - Ad-Hoc
- Develop and maintain custom analytical software, scripts, and computational pipelines. Evaluate and implement commercial and open-source tools as appropriate; lead pipeline design and development efforts; establish reproducible workflows and standard operating procedures (SOPs); and provide comprehensive methodological documentation. – AdHoc.
- Develop and optimize analytical pipelines for multi omics data. Identify, evaluate, and implement appropriate computational methods for preprocessing, quality control, integration, clustering, differential expression, and downstream analysis of single-cell datasets. – AdHoc
- Provide ad hoc training sessions and hands-on workshops on bioinformatics tools and analytical methodologies.
- Participate in group meetings; present analytical findings; and maintain current knowledge of emerging technologies and advances in biology, statistics, computer science, and bioinformatics. - Ad-Hoc.
Required Qualification:
- Master's Degree.
Required Experience:
- Apply an in-depth knowledge of computational methods in the analyses of large epidemiology and population genomics datasets including Genome Wide Association Studies GWAS and massively parallel NextGen sequencing
- Utilize commercial software, freeware and custom algorithms programs to accomplish scientific tasks and support biological discovery- Carry out NextGen data analyses across concurrent projects including mapping, SNP and structural variation discovery and validation, statistical analyses, meta-analyses of genomic features, pathways analyses, principal components analyses, and others 2
- Conduct analyses of GWAS data quality including analyses of multiple experimental designs simultaneously
- Carry out GWAS data and meta-data analyses including imputation analyses, stratification analyses, haplotype analyses, significant SNP and structural variation discovery and others
- Conduct statistical analyses to extract biologically meaningful information including meta-data from genomic and targeted element population studies 4
- Write custom programs and algorithms in support of biological discovery
- Validate and conduct quality analysis for all types NextGen sequencing data in the context of understanding complex disease and complex population structures
- Work with biologists in the design of models summarizing explaining experimental data, and in interpretation of data; provide correlation analyses of data derived from different experimental platforms such as correlation of whole exome re-sequencing and GWAS data
- Train biologists in data analyses and interpretation, provide feedback to biologists in bioinformatics best practices, coordinate with bioinformatics programmers to generate biologist-friendly tools and procedures
- Prepare reports and publication quality graphics summarizing experimental data including providing written documents describing methods
- Participate in group meetings with population genomics biologists, present findings to individuals and groups and advise on coordination of analyses and discovery methods
- Support high performance computer environmental resources, maintain work stations and identify and operate commercial software and freeware relevant to analyses
