Shift : Shift Details- Once the Contractor meets productivity and accuracy standards, the Tour of Duty may be scheduled as any 8-hour shift (plus a 30-minute unpaid lunch) between 06:00–17:00 CST, Monday through Friday.

Job Description:

  • The Medical Coder will be responsible for reviewing, interpreting, abstracting, and accurately assigning ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes for inpatient and outpatient healthcare services. The coder will support the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) by coding inpatient admissions, outpatient encounters, ambulatory surgery, ancillary services, prosthetics, pathology, anesthesia, and inpatient professional services in accordance with VA/VHA coding policies, official coding guidelines, and applicable reimbursement requirements. The position requires maintaining at least 95% coding accuracy, meeting established turnaround times and daily productivity requirements, and working with VA-approved electronic health record (EHR), encoder, and coding applications.

Qualifications:

  • Active credential from AHIMA: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CCA, or CDIP; or AAPC: CPC, CPC-H, or successor equivalents.
  • Completion of an accredited program in coding, health information management, or health information technology.
  • Minimum six to eight (6–8) years of experience in outpatient or inpatient coding.
  • Completion of required baseline ICD-10 training/CEUs necessary to maintain the applicable credential, consistent with AHIMA/AAPC requirements.
  • Certifications for each coder .
  • Education documentation .
  • Experience evidence demonstrating 6–8 years .
  • Contractor personnel providing direct coding services must be U.S. citizens located within a jurisdiction subject to the laws of the United States.
  • Contract coders must be located within a 50-mile radius of the closest VA Medical Center.
  • All contract coder AAPC and/or AHIMA certifications must be provided to the COR/CO at the time of award and annually thereafter.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform accurate inpatient and outpatient medical coding using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS Level II.
  • Review complete medical records, including physician documentation, nursing documentation, operative reports, diagnostic reports, laboratory and radiology documentation, and other supporting records.
  • Abstract required clinical and administrative information into the VA-approved encoder/EHR systems.
  • Assign appropriate principal, secondary, and additional diagnoses based on documentation and official coding guidelines.
  • Assign appropriate ICD-10-PCS procedure codes for inpatient procedures.
  • Assign CPT/HCPCS codes and appropriate modifiers for outpatient and professional services.
  • Apply current Evaluation and Management (E/M) coding guidelines.
  • Apply National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI/CCI) edits and bundling guidelines.
  • Identify and appropriately handle unbundling, duplicate encounters, erroneous encounters, and non-billable encounters.
  • Assign Present on Admission (POA) indicators where required for inpatient coding.
  • Review documentation for coding completeness and identify documentation that does not support an appropriate code.
  • Use approved query/escalation procedures when documentation is insufficient or unclear.
  • Perform coding re-reviews in response to billing edits, denials, audits, retrospective reviews, or VA staff inquiries.
  • Correct coding errors and substantiate coding decisions using recognized coding guidelines and references.
