ED Pt Care Tech
General Summary:
The Patient Care Technician provides support and assistance in the delivery of patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).
Essential Job Functions*:
- Observes patient responses, collects data as appropriate, documents in the medical record and reports to the RN.
- Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, assumes responsibility for their role in emergency situations.
- Assist with cleaning and room turn over.
- Assists patients with ADL's and toileting.
- Performs, documents, and reports vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, height/weight, peak flow and oxygen saturation; orthostatic vital signs; visual acuity.
- Prepares equipment and aids the RN or provider during treatment and examinations of patients.
- Performs procedures (12-lead electrocardiograms, one touch glucose testing), obtains laboratory specimens not requiring invasive procedure, assists with dressings, splinting, casting, post mortem care etc.
- Provides transport of Emergency Department patients, within the hospital and at discharge as requested.
- Once certified: performs Chain of Custody (COC) urine collections and Blood Alcohol Testing (BAT) as indicated when OH are unavailable.
- Performs all duties associated with the role of the Health Unit Coordinator:
- Compiles medical record forms for admissions, discharges and expirations. Maintains the records in the appropriate organization and sequential order.
- Assures that additional medical record forms (i.e. permits, consults) are complete with the correct patient identification and placed in the chart when needed.
- Obtains patients previous medical records as required.
- Files diagnostic tests in a timely manner with a high degree of accuracy.
- Appropriately and efficiently processes physician orders under the direction of a Registered Nurse with close attention to detail and accuracy.
- Notifies departments for specific tasks as needed (i.e. linen, maintenance etc.).
- Arranges and coordinates for prompt outside services, transfers, scans, ambulance services, etc., as requested, for maximum efficiency.
- Reports promptly to the patient's caregiver any matters requiring immediate nursing intervention.
- Maintains a neat, hazard free, well-organized working area.
- Assures that physicians, visitors and family members are received and greeted, providing accurate responses in a friendly and courteous manner.
- Performs other departmental secretarial tasks as needed (i.e. EMTALA forms, photocopying, faxing etc.).
- Demonstrates hospital's stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co-workers, patients, families and visitors.
- Actively and appropriately participates in problem-solving identification and resolution, both intra- and inter-departmentally.
- Meets department customer service standards and strives to enhance the level of customer service provided.
Qualifications:
- Education
Required: High School Graduate or equivalent.
Preferred:
- Work Experience
Required: Experience in a health care setting.
Preferred: Previous experience in a hospital setting serving the same age/type of patient population.
- Licensure/Certifications/Registrations
Required: Must be a Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the State of New Hampshire. Have current BLS certification (adult, child, and infant).
Required: Certification in COC and BAT within 1 year of hire.

Required: Ability to respond appropriately to changing patient and staffing conditions. Demonstrated ability to seek guidance and/or support from appropriate resources. Knowledge of emergency medical treatment.
Computer literacy. Ability to write clearly and concisely. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to give and accept feedback in a constructive manner.
