Emergency Radiologist
Job Description
The Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic Arizona (MCA) invites highly qualified emergency radiologists to join the expanding non-neuroradiology arm of our Emergency & Hospital Radiology (EHR) Division. This innovative hybrid role combines the flexibility of remote overnight practice with meaningful engagement in a premier academic medical center-offering a rare opportunity to shape both your professional lifestyle and clinical impact.
Why This Role Stands Apart
- Live Anywhere, Practice at Mayo Clinic: Work remotely from anywhere in the continental U.S. while contributing to one of the nation's most respected healthcare institutions.
- Balanced, Sustainable Schedule: Based on a 7 on/14 off model with alternating stints of early (5pm-1am) and late (8pm-6am) overnight shifts. Strategic overstaffing (7 radiologists covering 6 positions) allows for regular and equitable rotation of subdivision members off overnights to remote daytime shifts in appropriately aligned subspecialty divisions. The result is an average annual overnight shift load of approximately 104 (less than the 121 seen in strict 7-on/14-off schedules).
- Beyond Teleradiology: Integrated daytime/evening subspecialty shifts (on-site and remote) provide exposure to outpatient imaging, procedures, and direct collaboration.
- Meaningful Clinical Scope: A diverse case mix spanning CT, radiography, ultrasound, and MRI across complex inpatient and emergency populations.
- Academic Engagement: Active involvement in resident education, mentorship, and collaboration within a growing training program.
Practice Environment
While not a Level I trauma center, MCA's emergency department encompasses the full spectrum of acute and urgent pathology, supported by a highly advanced subspecialty practice with strengths in stroke, oncology, and organ transplantation.
Each overnight shift is supported by a collaborative team structure, including two non-neuroradiologists and one neuroradiologist, with overlapping coverage and additional subspecialty backup. The attending radiologist team supervises and overreads on-call MCA radiology residents (2 until midnight, and one overnight).
Candidate Profile
We seek radiologists who bring both clinical breadth and academic commitment, including:
- Expertise in emergency and acute inpatient imaging (abdominal, thoracic, musculoskeletal
- Proficiency in emergency neuroradiology (e.g. stroke imaging)
- Fellowship training in body, thoracic, or emergency radiology (preferred, not required)
- A passion for teaching, including supervision and mentorship of residents on call
A Truly Hybrid Academic Model
In addition to overnight responsibilities, physicians participate in a limited number of daytime/evening subspecialty shifts (max: 43 shifts annually, ultimate number individualized) aligned with their expertise. On-site time is thoughtfully bundled to encourage meaningful face-to-face collaboration, while maintaining flexibility through complementary remote work.
This structure provides a unique blend of:
- Academic engagement
- Procedural and outpatient exposure
- Professional autonomy and geographic flexibility
- Compensation & Benefits
Mayo Clinic offers a comprehensive benefits package aligned with a 1.0 FTE appointment, part of which includes:
- Generous professional expense allowance
- Travel stipend to support on-site engagement
- Reimbursement for licensure and credentialing expenses
