Summary

This role will lead high impact, complex drug development projects (ie late stage partnered asset or portfolio of assets) while also leading a team of Director/Associate Director level Global Project Managers in support of a product franchise or business unit. The incumbent is expected to build and maintain a broad network within Daiichi Sankyo across functions and regions to effectively manage project team strategy and deliverables and communicate risks and risk mitigation plans.

As a member of the GMP&L leadership team this position is responsible for developing PM talent and ensuring effective PM resourcing to drug development projects. This role will also be responsible for developing and executing departmental objectives as well as supporting the global R&D organization in identifying organizational process gaps, developing and implementing solutions to help improve or optimize organizational efficiency and decision making.
The position will report to the Executive Director (or Vice President), Global Head GPM&L.

Responsibilities

  • Project & Portfolio Management

    Lead strategy development in partnership with the Global Team Leader on a high complexity, high impact drug development project. In the case of an alliance, will lead and influence leaders across both companies. Effectively gets work done through others on the GPTs. Manages the PM resources who are allocated within the project regardless of reporting relationship. May lead the clinical sub-team in partnership with the Global Clinical Lead and drive the development and delivery of the clinical development plan in alignment with the overall product development strategy. Can step in, as needed, on behalf of the Global Team Leader to deliver governance presentations.

    Influences strategy and execution on projects within their scope of responsibility (ie 3 ADCs portfolio). Ensures GPMs develop integrated product development plans aligned with the team strategies. Develops and maintains high performing teams.
    Identifies organizational gaps and influences the project environment to address gaps that impact a program or portfolio.
  • Functional Accountability/Talent Development

    As a Group Leader within GPM&L provide leadership to the global organization by contributing to strategic direction, setting annual goals for the function and effective budget and resource management.

    Develop global GPM talent through assignments (including ex pat), coaching, performance management and establishing clear expectations.

    Responsible for managing a group of Project Managers either working on the same project or on projects within the same therapeutic area.

    Identifies and implements PM best practices for the broader GPM&L organization. Ensures awareness of the Global Development Processes in collaboration with the Japan GPM&L team. The incumbent is expected to be a thought leader in PM methodologies/tools and represent GPM&L both internally and externally.

Education Qualifications (from an accredited college or university)

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Master's Degree Advanced Degree preferred (i.e. MS, MBA or PhD) in a scientific discipline with additional relevant experience. Project Management strongly preferred preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • 10 or More Years 15+ years of experience in a PM or related role in biotech or pharmaceutical industry required
  • Proven experience as a people leader, manager, cross-functional coach. preferred
  • Proven experience hiring, training and developing global project management professionals. preferred
  • Proven track record as a leader/influencer preferred
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in Oncology (required) and other relevant Therapeutic Areas (highly preferred) preferred
  • Track record of project managing drug development teams from IND to NDA. Understanding of key research and drug discovery processes. preferred


Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Project Management Professional (PMP)-PMI preferred


Travel Ability to travel up to 30% International and domestic travel
