The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1/2 located in Petersburg!

** The recruitment period for this vacancy has been extended to allow for a larger applicant pool. If you have already applied there is no need to reapply. **

What you will be doing:
The Department of Fish and Game, Commercial Fisheries Division is seeking to hire a flexibly staffed seasonal Fisheries Biologist 1/2 to serve as the Petersburg/Wrangell Port Sampling Supervisor. The job will mainly consist of conducting sampling and directing fishery technicians in sampling commercially harvested salmon and shellfish landings as they occur at commercial seafood processors in Petersburg and Wrangell, Alaska. The port supervisor will be required to interact with commercial fishermen, processing plant workers and other ADF&G staff. This position directly supervises 5-10 seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician's and is responsible for hiring and training these individuals. The incumbent can expect to work irregular and sometimes long hours and this position requires the flexibility to work evenings and weekends (depending on the dynamics of the fisheries).

Our organization, mission and culture:
The Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and wellbeing are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.

This port sampling supervisor position assists and directs the collection of biological data from commercial salmon and shellfish landings. Data collections may include coded wire tags, fishery performance, pink sex ratios, age-length data, otoliths, genetic samples, morphometric and other biological data as directed. This information is used directly to manage State of Alaska fisheries. Some of our work is conducted as part of the Pacific Salmon Treaty and is considered the foundation on which the salmon management of Southeast Alaska is built.

The benefits of joining our team:
The State of Alaska is an excellent employer that offers benefits, including medical and accruement of leave. These positions are considered entry level and many of the biologists and managers that are currently with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game got their start as a port sampler.

The working environment you can expect:
The work is performed on docks and in the processing plants in Petersburg and Wrangell, Alaska often in cold, slippery, and wet conditions, working around moving parts and heavy equipment. Numerous sampling processes are involved, and several different sampling forms must be filled out correctly. Attention to detail and good communication skills are requirements.

Who we are looking for:

  • Experience acting as a crew leader or supervisor in fisheries research or fisheries management activities.
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently with remote supervision.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that will be dependent on commercial fishery openers and closures.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite
