FORENSIC/ED REGISTERED NURSE (SANE)

Job Summary:

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to the sexual assault victim. This will include a forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, support, and participation in legal proceedings. The SANE is expected to follow protocols established by the Medical Director and/or management of the SANE Program for which the SANE is employed. This position also functions as an Emergency Department Nurse when SANE cases are not in process.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to triage patient to determine if evidence collection is needed before forensic exam.
  • Coordinate care by all agencies involved in assisting the sexual assault victim and coordinate referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up as needed for each patient.
  • Perform and document sexual assault history and medical care accurately.
  • Perform a complete physical and forensic evidence collection examination including Head-to-Toe assessment for trauma, detailed genital examination, forensic specimen collection and documentation, including photography, and assess for mandatory reporting status, reporting when appropriate.
  • Document detailed injuries accurately with support of photographic evidence.
  • Maintain chain of custody for each sexual assault exam and adhere to evidence protocols
  • Maintain professional standards that do not create conflict of interests with employment or patient care, including patient and medical record confidentiality.
  • Administer appropriate prophylactic medications per protocols.
  • Must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on-call.
  • Provide testimony as fact witness to any/all cases performed while with SANE and coordinate with attorneys during judicial process. Preparation for court required between sane nurse, Sane Coordinator and Prosecutor before Court.
  • Debrief as needed to maintain emotional and physical wellness.
  • Maintain open communication with SANE Coordinator and/or Director of ED on regular basis.
  • Maintain equipment in proper working condition and exercise fiscal responsibility of unit's resources.
  • Share individual expertise with the other members of SANE
  • Function as an Emergency Department Nurse when SANE cases are not in process.


Reporting:

Reports to: Emergency Department Manager. Works closely in collaboration with the SANE Coordinator

Basic Educational Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current State of Ohio licensure as a Registered Nurse
  • Current BLS training required.
  • Successful completion of ACLS training, PALS, NRP, TNCC, etc. as required for specific departments, or willingness to obtain.


S.A.N.E Specific Requirements

  • Maintain current Registered Nurse Licensure or higher.
  • Complete the initial state SANE-A training.
  • Complete the initial and on-going preceptor requirements as identified by the SANE Program Coordinator.
  • Maintain competency by maintaining active performance of cases and/ or online case review through IAFN monthly.
  • Participate in quality assurance chart and photograph review process as determined by the SANE program every month.
  • Adhere to all administrative, clinical, and employment policies and procedures on file with the Director of ED/ Human Resource at OhioHealth SMC.
  • Commit to cover minimum number of shifts, holiday coverage, and other scheduling requirements as determined by the SANE program and emergency department manager.
  • Participate in professional development as determined by the SANE program, including staff meetings every month (8 out of 12 Months per year) in person or phone or emails, conferences, and in-services on new protocols or equipment.


SANE related training expenses incurred after being hired will be reimbursed by OhioHealth Southeastern Medical Center. However, failure to complete the required training will result in associates having to repay OhioHealth Southeastern Medical Center for the training expenses.
