Laboratory Assistant

Job Summary

Responsible for performing phlebotomy procedures (blood draws) in the laboratory and in the hospital.

Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions

  • Maintains blood drawing trays and keeps them properly stocked; Keeps drawing room neat and orderly. Orders stock items as necessary.
  • Accurately records all phlebotomy drawing and orders in the computer system.
  • Verifies correct patient by matching name and number on the request and the patient's wristband.
  • Notifies the appropriate medical technologist when a test is completed.
  • Uses good technique to prepare the venipuncture site and consistently obtain sample without using more than one stick.
  • Performs all procedures in a professional manner and properly disposes of used equipment when finished.
  • Asks for assistance from appropriate personnel when dealing with difficult patients.
  • Consistently uses time between test to departmental advantage by filling in with clerical work, assisting medical technologist.
  • Strictly agrees to hospital policies and procedures and always attempts to understand patient needs and respond accordingly.
  • Consistently demonstrates an ability to assess situation, consider alternatives and choose an appropriate course of action.
  • Has established a good rapport with all members of the hospital staff, works cooperatively with the laboratory staff and works at maintaining a good rapport and cooperative relationship with all patient care personnel.
  • Provides notification of absence or tardiness according to department standards.
  • Exhibits understanding of hospital emergency procedures regarding fire, safety and evacuation policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required
    • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent

Experience:

  • Preferred
    • Knowledge of medical laboratory practices and procedures
    • Knowledge of Medical Terminology
    • Knowledge of Lab/reference manuals, formularies, ICD-9 book, and reference lab procedures

Certification/Licensure:

  • Required
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
      • Must obtain within ninety (90) days of start date
  • Preferred
    • ASCP Board or Registry or equivalent
