Manager, Patient Safety

  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • The Manager, Patient Safety works collaboratively with the Quality Team leadership matrix, management, and front-line team members to improve quality and patient safety and reduce harm. Development of processes and standards to promote intra- and interdepartmental quality of service. A moderate level of independence in performance of the role and/or solution of problems is expected, however, demonstrated cooperation and collaboration is equally essential for successful functioning. Provides oversight and mentorship to the Quality Improvement Specialists and reports to the Director, Clinical Improvement and Analytics.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Advances quality and patient safety by implementing evidence-based best practices and efficient and effective processes.
    • Leads our organizational Causal Analysis mission and interactions with the Children's Hospital Association Patient Safety Organization.
    • Works with the QI team who will work with clinical unit-based teams to customize and implement best practices and processes to achieve safety and quality goals.
    • Develops and administers policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory and legal compliance.
    • Provides a comprehensive educational program for staff and others associated with the health system on quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
    • Provides guidance to the Safety Coach program.
    • Leads, manages, coaches, and trains a team or department, provides guidance, support, and mentors to ensure optimal performance and productivity.
    • Oversees the recruitment, hiring, team/department orientation, performance appraisals and disciplinary actions including up to termination processes for a team or department.
    • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • Required Licenses and/or Certifications
      • Licensure or certification in a healthcare related specialty required.
      • Must possess a valid driver's license.
    • Preferred Licenses and/or Certifications
      • Relevant certification in quality improvement preferred.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • Required Education and Experience
      • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent experience in a healthcare related field required.
      • Requires five or more years of progressively more responsible work experience in the areas of quality engineering relative to patient safety and analysis of, and implementation of, best practices.
    • Preferred Education and Experience
      • Master's Degree in a health care related field preferred.
    • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
      • Professional knowledge of areas of responsibility to include theory, practice and administration in order to direct planning and implementation.
      • Must have an understanding of LEAN/Toyota Production System methodologies.
      • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office and presentation software.
      • Excellent interpersonal relationship skills, oral and written communication skills, understanding of adult learning concepts and demonstrated success in educating groups.
      • Demonstrates success in managing projects.
      • Exposure to and working knowledge of national quality improvement and/or patient safety collaboratives.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
