Medical Laboratory Scientist

Summary of Essential Functions:

  • Performs medical laboratory tests, procedures and analysis to provide data for use in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.


Educational Requirements:

  • Ph.D., Master's or Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or Medical Technology.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.


Licenses and Certifications:

  • Nationally recognized certification; and/or HHS certification; and/or eligible.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • One year of laboratory training or experience or both in high complexity testing.
  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Making generalizations, evaluations or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria. Follow instructions exactly.
  • Must meet CLIA requirements for high complexity testing personnel.


Physical Requirements:

  • Bending, walking, standing for long periods of time, and lifting of up to 35 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity, visual acuity and color vision.
  • Must be able to handle all types of biological and physical specimens using proper blood and body fluid precautions.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs tests skillfully and accurately using approved methodologies and techniques, and in compliance with laboratory policies.
  • Ensures to prioritize work according to protocol, and efficiently performs procedures in a timely and organized manner within the established laboratory turn around times.
  • Recognizes interdependency of tests and possesses knowledge of physiological conditions affecting test results.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assess problems, synthesize alternatives, determine and implement acceptable solutions using sound judgment. Consults with supervisor if problem is above Technologist's expected level of expertise.
  • Performs, records, and monitors internal and external quality control procedures according to the specifications and time schedules for that department and documents all corrective action taken.
  • Performs and documents routine (and complex as assigned) preventative maintenance on equipment as designated according to specified procedures and time frames and keeps equipment clean and in good working order.
  • Demonstrates and ensures the practice of safe infection control procedures according to laboratory and hospital procedures and policies.
  • Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
