Medical Physicist Non-Exempt - LHMI - Rad Therapy


Responsibilities/Essential Functions (other duties as assigned):

  • Ensure treatment machines and radiation sources are correctly calibrated according to accepted protocols.
  • Assumes responsibility for acceptance testing, commissioning, calibration, and periodic QA of therapy equipment and treatment planning systems. Certifies therapy units and planning systems are performing according to specifications, and general beam data
  • Works collaboratively with radiation oncologists, medical dosimetrists, and radiation therapists to provide technical expertise in treatment planning, patient setup, and treatment delivery.
  • Performs quality assurance checks based on industry standards on all equipment including, but not limited to, linear accelerators; CT scanners; and treatment planning systems;
  • Generates beam data for all energies, modes and isotope sources. Evaluates the quality of the data and its appropriateness for treatment of difference disease sites.
  • Ensures beam and source data are correctly entered into the treatment planning system. Beam data should be tabulated in a form that is usable by the therapist, dosimetrist, and radiation oncologist.
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures, and along with Radiation Medical Director and other members of the treatment planning team, ensures adherence regarding treatment planning and treatment processes.
  • Performs and oversees the determination of radiation does distributions in patients undergoing treatment (i. e. , computerized treatment planning or direct radiation measurements). Consults with radiation oncologist on the evaluation and optimization of radiation therapy for specific patients
  • Conducts and documents appropriate QA checks for the administration of IMRT including hands-on IMRT treatment planning with high dose rate brachytherapy QA treatment planning and delivery.
  • Ensures policies and procedures are available, appropriate, followed, and "contain proper elements of good radiation oncology proactive, delivery of treatment, radiation safety, quality control, and regulatory compliance". Performs a yearly review of the appropriate sections of the policies/procedures manual, and provides recommendations for improvement to executive leadership.
  • Determines the release of a treatment machine into clinical service after maintenance has been performed, and document appropriately that any alteration caused by maintenance and repair does not affect the accelerator performance or calibration
  • Provides education and training in QA, radiation safety, the QMP, and regulatory compliance for radiation oncologists, therapists, dosimetrists, nurses, medical technical assistants, middle management and technical staff.
  • Working Conditions:
    • This position functions primarily indoors in a medical / business environment. Employee may be subject to blood borne pathogens, radiation, bio waste and other medically-related factors, with exposure to moderate noise levels.
    • Visual acuity to read and compute screen and paper documents; close and distance vision, peripheral vision depth perception, ability to adjust focus; hearing acuity to converse with staff and customers;ability to walk, stoop, bend, kneel, and lift and move 25 pounds on a regular basis; ability to sit for hours at a time
      Employee will be exposed to moderate noise levels, interruptions, and occasionally asked to work evening and weekends as needed.

Education and Work Experience

  • Master's degree in radiologic physics.
  • Certification by the American College of Radiology or equivalent
  • Minimally two years experience as a clinical medical physicist within a radiation oncology setting preferred.
  • BLS certification.
  • American Board of Medical Physics Certification (Preferred).
