JOB SUMMARY
A Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is responsible for the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in all areas of the clinical laboratory. Maintains laboratory records. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control and quality improvement practices in the laboratory.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform high-complexity testing across all areas of the clinical laboratory, including blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and serology/immunology.
- Ensure accurate and timely analysis of patient specimens in accordance with established protocols.
- Perform quality control, instrument calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable results.
- Evaluate and validate test methods, including correlation studies and performance verification.
- Identify and resolve discrepant results or out-of-range quality control values, implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Verify specimen integrity and patient identification prior to testing.
- Communicate critical values promptly to physicians and nursing staff.
- Maintain accurate documentation for testing, quality control, and billing within the laboratory information system.
- Perform specialized testing procedures, including microbiology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, serology, and blood bank testing (e.g., antibody screening and crossmatching).
- Adhere to all safety, infection control, and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with laboratory leadership, pathologists, and interdisciplinary teams to support patient care and quality improvement.
- Maintain a clean, organized work environment and ensure adequate supply levels.
- Participate in weekend, holiday, and on-call rotations as required.
- Demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support efficient laboratory operations.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS - Education, Experience & Licensure
Medical Technologist I
- Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and
- Medical laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP)/(AMT) certified or eligible within one year of hire.
Medical Technologist II
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Microbiology, Medical Lab Science or related field or equivalent experience required and
- Medical Technologist MT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP) or AMT registered or eligible within one year of hire.
Additional Skill
- Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Operates laboratory equipment correctly and safely.
Specific demands not listed: Possible exposure to blood and or body fluids / infectious disease / hazardous waste requiring the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Exposure to odorous chemicals / specimens and Latex products. Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening is required.
