Job Description:

  1. PURPOSE OF JOB: To perform, under the responsibility and supervision of the Urgent Care Physician on duty, diagnostic and therapeutic tasks, for patients of all ages, allowing the Urgent Care Physician to extend his/her services.
  1. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Take a medical history and perform a thorough medical exam.
  2. Order diagnostic tests as necessary..
  3. Prescribe treatment, refer appropriately for follow up care, and educate the patient on self-care at home.
  4. In conjunction with the Urgent Care Physician, recognize more serious medical conditions, and direct the patient to the Emergency Department for care.
  5. Provide, as much as possible, a pleasant and efficient urgent care experience for the patient.

III. JOB CRITERIA AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  1. Assists the physician in the care and work-up of patients.
    1. Performs and records History and Physical Examination.
    2. Order and interpret appropriate laboratory and x-ray studies as per protocol or after consultation with the supervisory/attending physician.
    3. Refer to specialty follow up as appropriate, after consultation with the Urgent Care Physician.
    4. Summarizes appropriate data during the Urgent Care visit.
    5. Completes informative discussion with patient and family regarding patient care and treatment.
    6. Demonstrates clinical judgment, ability to make decisions.
    7. Demonstrates the ability to efficiently move patients through the urgent care visit.
    8. Provides superior patient care which is technically excellent, respectful, compassionate and friendly.
  1. Participates in care of patients, being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of change in the patient's condition.
    1. Informs the physician of all changes in the patient's condition.
    2. Assess the patient's treatment course, and transcribe/implement indicated therapy.
    3. Communicates patient progress to appropriate consultants as needed.
    4. Collects data and writes pertinent progress notes in the electronic medical record.
    5. Communicates with ancillary and nursing staff to gather information and discuss patient care.
    6. Communicates appropriate information to family members.
  1. Performs minor procedures
    1. Performs incision and drainage of abscesses.
    2. Performs wound repair of simple to moderate wounds using appropriate methods, to include adhesive strips, wound adhesive, sutures and staples, as required.
    3. Performs removal of uncomplicated foreign bodies of the skin, ears or nose.
    4. Performs simple splinting of extremity fractures.
