Hospital Internal Medicine (HIM) is one of the largest NP/PA practices at Mayo Clinic- Rochester. As NP/PA hospitalists, we pride ourselves by working at the top of our scope of practice. NP/PAs within the division of HIM are expected to practice at the highest level of their licensure and with a significant amount of autonomy, requiring providers to stay up to date with the latest evidence based medicine. NP/PAs participate in all aspects of care of the hospitalized patient including admissions, discharges, daily rounds and patient education.
HIM is comprised of various medical services specializing in general internal medicine, geriatrics, telemetry, perioperative medicine, and medical hematology and oncology. Each service has a Physician, NP/PA, and Clinical Assistant, who work collaboratively with consulting services to provide excellent care to a complex and diverse patient population. 24/7 coverage of hospitalist patients is provided by NP/Pas, with additional compensation for evenings, nights and weekends.
In addition to clinical practice, many of the NP/PA's serve in respected positions within the division and institution. Leadership opportunities occur within Administration, Quality Improvement, Research, Education and Personnel committees. As a new member of the division, there are many opportunities to partner with colleagues, both physician and NP/PA, in research and quality improvement projects. Additionally, the division of HIM serves as a training ground for NP and PA students, as well as Mayo medical students, visiting medical students and HIM fellows, providing ample opportunity to be involved in clinical education.
Ideal candidates for the NP/PA position with HIM have an extensive medical knowledge base, inpatient medical experience, and a continual desire to learn and grow as a health care provider. As a new provider in HIM, orientation is provided including learning the Mayo model of patient care, hospital medicine-focused learning modules reviewing current guidelines and standards of practice, in-person classes for EMR training, dictation training, ECG interpretation, ACLS/BLS, and simulation-based learning at HIM Boot Camp.
