Nursing Director - Perinatal Services
The Nursing Department Director manages a multifunctional service area to ensure quality outcomes, maximum efficiency, while adhering to budgeted resource allocations. The Director provides direction to a multiskilled work force to ensure that services and outcomes comply with standards established by the hospital as well as accrediting, licensing, and other regulatory agencies. Perinatal Services incorporates L&D, Mother Baby and Newborn Nursery.
Leads and directs staff in accordance with the organization’s vision, mission, and values. Acts as a role model by demonstrating exemplary personal and professional attributes consistent with organizational values. Provides support for staff with issues or concerns impacting job expectations or performance.
Manages departmental operations.
- Ensures appropriate, timely, and professional communications.
- Develops and reviews department policies and procedures at least annually.
- Develops, implements and reviews goals, objectives and priorities, ensuring alignment with hospital strategic plans.
- Organizes departmental activities based on priorities, goals, objectives, and needs as arise.
- Assigns and adjusts staffing to meet priorities, goals, and objectives of department while ensuring smooth operations.
- Performs department human resource activities, e.g. staffing, competencies, training and skill checklists; annual and periodic performance evaluations; staff relations, staffing adjustments, etc.
- Ensures appropriate supplies and equipment are available to perform activities.
- Prepares budgets, productivity and other operational activities.
- Develops and implements department performance improvement (PI) plan and submits reports as required.
- Obtains and implements databases and other computer software to enhance department performance.
- Creates and analyzes a variety of reports as requested or needed.
- Develops and implements department policies and procedures.
- Conducts and records monthly department meetings with staff.
- Addresses and resolves complaints.
Ensures effective staff education and competency. Provides leadership for staff development and ensures staff participation in appropriate orientation, training courses and mandatory education. Actively participates in process of assuring that staff maintains required license and certification
Communicates organizational and departmental policies and messages effectively. Assumes primary responsibility for ensuring that staff are kept informed about clinical, administrative and environmental issues
Integrates quality improvement practices to improve patient outcomes and services.
Ensures effective utilization of resources. Appropriate use of staff, materials and facility to meet budgetary objectives. Implements strategies to maintain/increase revenue while controlling expenses.
