Outpatient Coder

  • JOB RELATIONSHIPS
    • Responsible to Administrator
  • DEFINITION OF POSITION
    • Codes, sequences and enters into 3M encoder all patient types of medical records using the ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM and CPT coding systems. Interacts with members of the medical staff, nursing units, Business Office, Patient Access Department, Clinical Documentation Specialist, physician offices and general public. Assists Supervisor with reports and other special projects as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
    • Professional
      • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Associate (CCA) preferred, will consider applicant with extensive knowledge and experience coding in a hospital setting. If not current CCS on hire, must become credentialed within 1 year of employment and must maintain credentials on a permanent basis.
      • Extensive knowledge of computers, encoders, Medical Terminology, Disease processes, Pharmacology and body systems required.
      • Working knowledge of basic office equipment ex. Laser Printer, FAX machine, copy machine, etc.
      • Inpatient coders must have knowledge of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT and DRG's
      • Outpatient coders must have knowlege of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, APC's and HCPCs.
      • Adhers to AHIMA code of ethics at all times.
