PA/NP – General Surgery  
Duration:5 year contract
Hours: Monday through Friday 0730-0430 
Location: San Antonio, TX

Requirements:

General Surgery Clinic Physician Extender:   * The primary functions of the Physician Extender will be as indicated below. 
* These functions will be carried out under the direction of the Chief of General Surgery or his/her designated government representative. 
* It is understood that the unattended performance of invasive procedures will
not be undertaken until the physician extender is credentialed in writing by Chief, General Surgery Service for each
procedure in question.
* Assist with the daily clinical care of outpatient general surgery patients. 
* Primary patient populations will include Bariatric and Oncology patients; specialty certification in these areas is not required. 
* Evaluate and treat general surgery clinic patients. 
* Perform minor procedures, including but not limited to history taking, physical
examination, recording progress notes, writing orders for patient care, performing staple and suture removal, wound
care and wound debridement, incision and drainage of skin abscess, closure of lacerations, biopsy or removal of skin
lesions, excision of subcutaneous mass to include sebaceous cysts, lipomas, and removal of medi-ports if delegated
by the supervising surgeon. 
* Participate in the rounds and other education and planning meetings of the general surgery service. 
* Participate in clinical research. 
* Participate in national, state, and local disaster planning, infection control, and ACLS. 
* Provide instructional information to visiting military and civilian students, residents, and staff personnel in general surgery patient management.
* Provide services as the primary assistant (first assist) to the assigned surgeon. 
* Typical duties include positioning / repositioning of the patient, exposure of the surgical site, which may involve helping to place retractors, or holding them; with hemostasis, which may involve using a bovie for electrocoagulation of bleeding vessels,
clamping (hemostats) or tying and cutting vessels, applying dressings, suturing and closure of body planes and skin,
as well as other activities during the case - under the supervision and guidance of the primary surgeon.
