Job Overview:
The perfusionist is to maintain adequate circulatory and respiratory support during open heart surgery. This support includes: set up and operation of the extra corporeal circuit, set up and calibration of physiological monitoring as required for the conduct of perfusion, set up and operation of the auto transfusion equipment, calibration and operation of point of care testing equipment, as well as maintaining proper perfusion records. The perfusionist is responsible for the set up and operation of advanced life support systems including : intra-aortic balloon pump, ventricular assist devices, adult, pediatric, and neonatal ECMO and cardiac laser technology. The perfusionist is also required to be competent to scrub and utilize the blower/mister.
Qualifications:
Required:
- The perfusionist must be a graduate from a council on Allied Health Education Administration (CAHEA) approved perfusion training program and be certified or certification eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion
- Being examined within two (2) years of eligibility.
- If non-certified, the perfusionist must have completed seventy-five (75) primary cardiac perfusions per year for the last two (2) consecutive years.
- The perfusionist must successfully complete all orientation programs.
- The perfusionist must hold a valid license for the practice of perfusion in the state of New Jersey.

Essential Functions:
- The perfusionist works in the operating room and in other critical care environments of the hospital, including ICU's, cath labs, etc. Hazards include; exposure to patient bodily fluids, danger of needle sticks, cuts etc.
- As circulating perfusionist, checks all rooms and is readily available to assist the promary perfusionist.
- Assesses pertinent lab data in a timely manner
- Complteres and files all perfusionist relatied paper work with entry of clinical information in CAOS information system.
- Conducts cardiopulmonary bypass safely in conjunction with surgeon's requirements
- Effectively communicates with the phsicians concerning patient status
- Maintains adequate stock levels and replenishes all medications and disposeables as needed
- Performs all necessary quality controls and calibrations
