Position Summary
The Pharmacy Supervisor, under the direction of the Pharmacy Director, will serve as the primary retail pharmacist and operational leader for Saint Anthony Hospital's outpatient community pharmacy. This is a working supervisor role that will require the balance of direct patient care responsibilities including the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care through comprehensive prescription review, final product verification, and patient education with administrative, regulatory and operational oversight of the pharmacy. In collaboration with the Pharmacy Director, the Pharmacy Supervisor will oversee pharmacy technicians and pharmacists to ensure safety, efficiency, and productivity in an outpatient pharmacy setting.
The Pharmacy Supervisor will assist in enhancing workflow efficiencies, improving the quality of patient care provided at Saint Anthony Hospital, and developing and implementing ambulatory pharmacy initiatives. The Pharmacy Supervisor will ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures, state and federal laws and organizational regulations. The Pharmacy Supervisor will also assist in training, evaluating and scheduling pharmacy staff.
The Saint Anthony Hospital outpatient community pharmacy averages approximately 120 prescriptions per day and functions as an integral gateway to medication related services and continuity of care within the community, including 340B-eligible patients.
As the services provided by the outpatient pharmacy continue to expand, the Pharmacy Supervisor will be an integral team member in providing oversight and accountability with new initiatives that provide value to the Saint Anthony community and team members of the pharmacy department. The Pharmacy Director and other members of the leadership team will continually be a resource for the Pharmacy Supervisor providing administrative and operational support where needed.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical and Dispensing Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary dispensing pharmacist, providing prescription verification, patient counseling, and medication therapy support
- Ensure accurate, safe, and timely dispensing of medications by correctly entering orders into the electronic system, filling prescriptions, and verifying orders electronically and visually
- Provide clinical advice to patients and other healthcare professionals in relation to the safe use of medicines, general health, and lifestyle matters within their scope of service
- Promote patient-centered care with a focus on medication adherence, education, and access
- Deliver culturally competent care aligned with the needs of the Saint Anthony Hospital community
Operational and Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day leadership and oversight of outpatient pharmacy operations
- Address patient service issues and resolve operational challenges in a timely manner
- Direct the ordering and receipt of medicines from pharmaceutical wholesalers
- Develop and maintain efficient workflow processes to optimize productivity and patient experience
- Manage scheduling, staffing coverage, and daily operational needs
- Supervise, train, and support pharmacy technicians and other pharmacy staff including the completion of annual and ongoing performance evaluations
Administrative and Compliance Responsibilities:
- Perform duties as Pharmacist-In-Charge as outlined by the State Board of Pharmacy
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local pharmacy regulations, accreditation (i.e., JCAHO) standards, and hospital policies and procedures
- Supervise 340B Drug Pricing Program compliance in coordination with the 340B Analyst and Pharmacy Director including 340B inventory management, prescription eligibility and documentation
- Oversee additional inventory management activities including controlled substance handling, drug reverse distribution and waste reduction
- Participate in budgeting, expense control, and financial performance oversight
- Performs both essential and marginal job functions in a safe manner as identified by Saint Anthony Hospital and the pharmacy department while adhering to the Hospital's confidentiality norms and standards
- Oversee the appropriate management and storage of prescription records in accordance with state law
- Serve as primary pharmacy preceptor for pharmacy students when needed
Quality, Safety and Collaboration:
- Assist Pharmacy Director with the development and implementation of policies and procedures which are designed to enhance quality through regulatory compliance, improve patient experience and satisfaction, and promote a culture of safety for team members and patients
- Support new pharmacy services and initiatives as well as workflow enhancements
- Aid in monitoring the quality of services provided and the collection and reporting of data for improvement
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Pharmacy Director and assist in achieving department goals and objectives
- Actively and consistently demonstrate the core values of Saint Anthony Hospital in all interactions with others
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy
- Current, unrestricted pharmacist license in the state of practice
- Minimum 2-3 years of retail or outpatient pharmacy experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of outpatient pharmacy operations, workflow management, and regulatory compliance
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills
- Ability to balance daily dispensing activities with administrative responsibilities
- Ability to prioritize and handle stress appropriately
Preferred:
- Understanding of the 340B Drug Pricing Program
- Previous pharmacy manager or supervisor experience
- Certified Immunizer or willing to become an immunizer
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Bilingual in English/Spanish
Work Conditions
- Full-time position (1.0 FTE)
- Primarily based in the Saint Anthony Hospital outpatient community pharmacy
- Combination of standing, walking, and repetitive motion associated with dispensing activities
- Frequent interaction with patients, caregivers, providers, and hospital staff
- Standard outpatient pharmacy hours, including weekends and holidays, with flexibility required to meet operational needs.
