DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is responsible professional work calling for the services of a licensed physician. Employees in this class perform work of a general or specialized nature, ensuring adherence to quality assurance/quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Work is outlined and reports are reviewed by the appropriate authority but methods of execution are left to the discretion of the physician. Supervision may be exercised over the work of nursing personnel. The physician may work in a staff capacity in a county institution such as a health-related facility, infirmary or jail or provide medical services or consultation in connection with a specific program such as sexually transmitted infections (STI's) or tuberculosis disease and Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI). The employee performs their work in accordance with established policies and procedures. The typical work activities listed below are illustrative of the kind of work an employee in this class may perform. It is not a comprehensive list of all activities an employee in this class may engage in but rather a list that shows the variety and kind of work the employee performs. Conversely it is not expected that an employee in this class perform all of the duties listed below. Depending on the location of employment a physician may engage in all or some of the activities described. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: The typical work activities listed below, while providing representative examples of the variety of work assignments in the title, do not describe any individual position. Incumbents in this title may perform some or all of the following, as well as other related activities not described. Performs physical examinations of patients; Diagnoses and treats patients within the area of specialty; Takes medical history of patients; Provides regular and emergency medical care to patients and residents; When appropriate, formulates treatment plans for the patient with the appropriate member of the health care team; When appropriate, dispenses medications, including vaccine administration; Authorizes and orders diagnostic and laboratory tests and reviews results; Prescribes and reviews prescriptions of medication, limiting prescriptions wherever possible to Formulary drugs; Informs patients of their medical conditions where appropriate; Recommends specialized hospital care or services as needed; Prepares discharge summaries with final diagnoses on all released patients;

Confers with other physicians on diagnoses; Refers patients to dentist, physical therapy or other specialized health services as needed; Refers patients to podiatrists, surgeons or other specialists; Authorizes restraints on institutional patients as necessary to protect the patient from self- injury or injury to others and reviews such authorizations periodically; Inspects and reports on general safety and sanitary conditions of facility; Examines and treats children in foster homes; Sets level of participation in activities or exercise program; Attends and participates in staff conferences, meetings and trainings; Remains on call and available during time off, as assigned by call schedule, to provide emergency care; Provides counseling and health education as it relates to patient's medical condition; Assists in the preparation of written medico-social patient care and discharge plans; Documents all diagnoses, treatments, and other relevant information in the patient's chart; Records information, prepares reports and maintains clear and accurate records. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine; thorough knowledge of the medical area of specialization; thorough knowledge of the methods used in handling patients in a clinic setting; thorough knowledge in making diagnoses and prescribing medication and treatment; good knowledge of infection prevention and control; ability to get along well with others; conscientiousness and thoroughness; interest in maintaining high standard of professional ethics; good motor, hand and eye coordination; sound professional judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: At the time of appointment, candidates must be in possession of a current license issued by the New York State Education Department to practice medicine in the State of New York. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 1) At the time of appointment, candidates must be in possession of a current license and registration as a Physician in accordance with Section 6524 of New York State Education Law, and Title 8, Part 60 of the New York Codes, Rules and Regulations (NYCRR).

2) Incumbents must be certified or eligible for certification in their area of specialization by the appropriate American Board of Medicine. 3) Incumbents must possess and continuously maintain throughout the duration of employment in this title current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Note: In accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134), incumbents who are required to wear N95 respirators must undergo annual N95 fit testing.
