POLYSOMNOGRAPHIC TECHNICIAN

Position Summary:

The Polysomnographic Technician performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing and analysis and associated interventions under the direction of a Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and/or Medical Director.

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Some previous Medical Experience
  • BLS certification within 30 days of hire
  • Experience in Sleep and/or Respiratory


Job Responsibilities:

  • Verify the medical order, protocol and documentation
  • Explain the procedure and orient the patient to the sleep center.
  • Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning.
  • Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
  • Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals.
  • Perform routine Bi-level/CPAP mask fitting.
  • Perform patient teaching utilizing video and verbal communication.
  • Follow procedural protocols (e.g. PSG Test, O2 Titration, Split Night, Bi-level/CPAP Titrations, etc.).
  • Follow "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values (e.g. body position, oxygen saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc).
  • Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free.
  • Identify and report signal abnormalities.
  • Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Assist with appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as Bi-level/CPAP administration, etc.).
  • Follow "lights on" procedures to verify the integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.).
  • Assist with documenting clinical events utilizing sleep lab protocols.
  • Provides education to patients undergoing testing.
  • Demonstrates the ability to analyze and troubleshoot situations and taking appropriate action to resolve issues.
  • Documents in the sleep log accurately at the end of the shift.
  • Admits patients in to the scheduling system.
  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.
  • Identifies equipment issues, takes equipment out of service, labeling the item with date and issue for lead tech to evaluate.
  • Maintain current BLS certification. Maintain competency in cardiac rhythm recognition.
  • Check the AED at the beginning of each shift, noting expiration dates on electrodes and leads.
  • Scoring, sleep/wake stages and clinical events per sleep lab protocols.
  • Scoring of clinical events (i.e. respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) utilizing center specific protocols.
  • Completes the technical comment form on each patient's test.
  • Generate scored report for physician interpretation.
  • Utilize night shifts with less than four patients to score 2-3 tests per night.
