About the Job

GFS Chemicals is seeking a Production Chemist to join our Organic Division at our River St. location. The Production Chemist is responsible for safely and efficiently performing chemical processes in a laboratory setting and identifying opportunities for improvement and reporting them to Operations Manager. This role provides technical input to manufacturing instructions and records observations on batch tickets, identifies and reports maintenance issues with equipment and engages with maintenance and engineering departments when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manufacture products as directed by management and chemical preps

  • Pilot scale batches in reaction flasks of 22-50 Liters
  • R&D scale batches up to 10 Liters
  • Thorough completion of batch tickets; records observations and reports deviations to Supervisor
  • Identifies continuous improvement opportunities and reports to supervisor. Takes notes in lab notebook and margins of batch tickets to capture new data and drive process improvement
  • Repackaging of products from bulk inventory to fill orders

  • Perform general housekeeping tasks.

  • Maintains high standards of housekeeping for the entire facility
  • Coordinate the storage of raw materials

  • Operate and navigate the automation control system to perform the following functions:

  • Start, transfer, and complete a chemical process
  • Monitor the process for fluctuations with pH level, temperature, and volume
  • Respond to and resolve alarms

  • Implement all necessary tasks needed to fulfill production schedule

  • Is a technical expert on process activities
  • Implements and reviews shift transition
  • Offers advice and suggestions on scheduling

  • Work orders / Repairs / Improvements

  • Reports issues to Supervisor
  • Assists as needed within work center

  • Waste Management

  • Handles chemical waste according to written SOPs

  • Assist other production areas as directed

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree with a focus in chemistry preferred
  • 0 to 3 years of prior lab experience in industrial/manufacturing setting preferred
  • Core Skills:
  • Respect for chemicals and mechanical aptitude
  • Previous lab experience in a manufacturing setting
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at once
  • Ability to navigate, control, and read instructions with an automation control system
  • Good organizational, housekeeping and inventory management practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Sharepoint
  • Problem solving/analytical, math skills
  • Knowledgeable of hazardous handling and disposal
  • Ability to follow English oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate verbally with co-workers & others
  • Maintains a positive attitude toward work and others
  • Works well under minimal supervision
