A Brief Overview
Operates radiology equipment to produce diagnostic x-rays as prescribed by physicians and perform routine diagnostic procedures according to established standards and practices.
What you will do
- Reviews patient's medical record and physician's request prior to radiographic procedure to obtain and record identifying information required for the treatment and patient records. Demonstrates knowledge and skills and maintains competencies required to provide care appropriate to age of the patients served within department.
- Determines proper settings; selects and prepares equipment and supplies as needed for each exam/procedure. Exercises judgment in selecting and computing settings to compensate for such variances as patient size, age, gender, and tissue density. Selects proper film size, positions equipment at proper distance and angle, and adjusts cones or collimators to image a specified area.
- Performs radiology procedures as ordered by physician, consistent with patient care policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management, infection control practices, patient safety practices and departmental activities. * Elicits the cooperation of patients by explaining procedure. Positions and instructs patients regarding x-ray procedures. Evaluates the patient's condition and applies immobilizing devices when the patient cannot cooperate. Uses supportive devices such as sandbags, angle boards and binders to obtain precise position, to avoid re-injury, discomfort and pain, or intruding the sterile field. * Performs a variety of orthopedic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, obstetric, bone imaging, barium enemas, chest, head and neck radiographic procedures, etc. to produce x-ray images. * Uses portable/mobile radiographic units; pushes or operates mechanically driven portable units and performs radiographic procedures within specialty areas such as Trauma ICU, obstetrics units and in surgery under sterile conditions when requested. * Prepares and assists in administering contrast agents by monitoring dosages and determining any potential allergies ensuring compliance with department policies and procedures. * Observes patient and equipment during procedure. * Reports adverse or any unusual reactions or events. * Processes films and prepares images of x-rays for viewing following established procedures. * Recognizes and corrects technical errors to ensure a clear and accurate x-ray. * Practices radiation safety through appropriate use of radiation protection devices and adhering to radiation safety standards to protect patient and staff and to comply with regulatory agencies and requirements. * Ensures accurate documentation in performing and processing all procedures in order to capture all charges and other relevant information. * Operates the Radiology Information System to enter required test data and patient information, using all appropriate modules with accuracy. Ensures patient information and images are correctly transmitted to PACS system.
- Documents care based on standards of care and practice and/or clinical priorities for documentation (assessment, radiology procedure, and patient's response during procedure).
- Responds and/or participates with medical emergencies. Initiates and/or assists with CPR/BLS/ACLS as required.
- Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).
- Confers and works collaboratively with patient/family/hospital staff in a customer responsive and courteous manner, in compliance with iRESPECT standards and promoting patient/customer satisfaction in coordinating/implementing patient care activities.
- Prepares and maintains required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes. Utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve data.
- Participates in quality/performance improvement. Collects quality data for monitoring performance improvement and to produce the best value service.
- Provides support to radiology and other medical and hospital staff to provide clinical assistance as needed. Assists in orientation and supervision of new staff members and students when they provide patient care, treatment and services as part of their training.
- Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities which includes committees, monitoring and follow-up.
- Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel. Prepares or cleans patient rooms by changing linens, stocking supplies and wiping off tables and equipment. Adheres to established policies, compliance/quality improvement, and safety, environment and infection control standards.
- Assists in care and maintenance of equipment and effective utilization of supplies. Notifies supervisor of equipment malfunction.
- Provides coverage for relief and absences. Demonstrates flexibility to work night, weekend and holiday shifts to provide continuous radiology coverage as required.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved AMA Radiology Technology program. Required and
- Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the neonate, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient population as specialty assignment dictates. Required
- ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists within 1 Year Required and
- CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation Upon Hire Required
- Experience in patient care as obtained through completion of a Radiology Technology program. Required
