Responsibilities What You’ll Do The Clinical Diabetes Educator (RN or RD) is responsible for planning, implementing, goal setting and evaluating diabetes self-management training for patients and their families. As an outpatient Clinical Diabetes Educator, this individual must be prepared to:Provide patients with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage their diabetes. Possess a body of knowledge that spans across disciplines to provide comprehensive Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT). Provide diabetes self-management training (DSMT) to patients individually and in group classes. DSMT topics include, and are not limited to, explaining diabetes pathophysiology, initiation of insulin, oral agents and/or other diabetes medications, training on glucometers, working with insulin pumps, and education about self-management related hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, chronic complications and foot care.
