Retail Pharmacy Assistant

JOB SUMMARY

The Pharmacy Assistant provides support to the Retail Pharmacy by assisting customers at the counter and drive through window, retrieving prescriptions, ringing up orders, assisting in over the counter product location and sales. This position operates under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist at all times and directly reports to the Pharmacy Manager. The Retail Pharmacy Assistant must be committed to providing excellent customer service, demonstrate a positive attitude, show compassion and care and be comfortable interacting with patients and providers.

This is an entry level position. Work experience in customer-facing positions in a retail setting is highly preferred. Excellent communication skills required.

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:

  • Creates an environment that enables customers to feel welcome, important and appreciated.
  • Exhibits excellent phone skills and ability to triage calls and messages; forwards to appropriate staff.
  • Responds to patient calls or texts efficiently and courteously regarding non-discretionary information.
  • Operates register POS system, processes patient transactions, collects and handles cash as required, follows all cashier handling policies to prevent loss.
  • Utilizes system to look-up patient information, enter prescription refills in the pharmacy computer system.
  • Checks in product from vendors, process product returns.
  • Ability to follow instruction and support Pharmacy Manager and Pharmacists at all times.


JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • WA State Pharmacy Assistant License


Training and Experience

  • Retail experience with excellent communication skills.
  • Prior register and POS experience.
  • Thorough understanding and adherence to HIPAA regulations, ability to handle highly confidential information as required by law.


OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

  1. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal for; ability to organize work effectively; ability to perform basic math calculations; demonstrated skills in telephone etiquette.
  2. Physically capable of working an eight (8) or ten (10) hour shift requiring prolonged standing and/or sitting; extensive walking; frequent lifting (up to 25 pounds unaided); frequent pushing/pulling; stooping, bending, and stretching; prolonged viewing of C.R.T.
  3. Technicians who have been trained by a pharmacist in safety and sterile preparation in compliance with USP chapter 797 may prepare chemotherapy admixtures. Technicians performing in this role must complete annual competency and training in preparation of hazardous substances.
  4. Will be asked to perform miscellaneous other duties as directed by the pharmacy manager that are within the scope of the WGH pharmacy technician utilization plan.
