Performs professional nursing duties in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Maternal Child Division, Department of
Nursing, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Provides advanced level of specialized nursing care to critically ill
Level II/III neonatal patients from the entire European theater and surrounding nations. The employee will utilize
the nursing process in the planning, implementing, coordinating, and supervision of highly specialized nursing care.
This care includes but is not limited to intub ation and ventilator initiation/maintenance; maintenance of multiple and
highly specialized medications and IV drips; maintenance of umbilical and peripheral IV lines; assistance with
specialized procedures; maintenance and use of highly specialized medica l devices and equipment. The employee
may function as a Nurse Consultant in other areas within the MTF to care for and to advise less experienced nurses
in the care of critically ill infants. Attends high risk deliveries to provide infant resuscitation sup port, transitions high
risk infants and stabilizes for transport to NICU. Counsels family members of patients concerning protocols,
anticipated results, procedures, possible complications, and subsequently monitors patients during the length of stay.

Plan s and facilitates transport of neonatal patients both from other countries to Landstuhl as well as transports from
Landstuhl back to the United States. Ensures transport equipment is functional and ready for service. Serves as the
medical attendant both fl ight and ground infant transport.

In emergency situations when a physician is not present or immediately available, initiates appropriate measures to
include initiation of resuscitative measures in the case of cardiac or respiratory arrest, aspiration, pn eumothorax,
extubation and symptoms of grave and worsening physical condition.

Functions as the charge or primary nurse responsible for direct patient care and provides supervisory instruction of
assigned civilian and military staff. Assigns nursing staff appropriately according to the acuity and complexity of
patient care requirements and the qualifications and capabilities of the staff member. Communicate/coordinate in
making appropriate referrals as needed. Coordinate with outside departments to meet di scharge planning needs of
patient and family. Holds periodic conferences and counseling sessions for staff. Participates in unit and hospital -
wide performance improvement initiatives and in performance evaluation processes. Supervises the work of
healthcar e trainees, temporary nurses, and ancillary medical personnel, maintaining required records and

Utilizes knowledge of critical care ethical and legal issues to provide maximum appropriate family support during
the infant’s hospitalization. Consults with other professionals to provide appropriate crisis intervention. (
