Scientist - Tissue Systems

Scientist - Tissue Systems
United Therapeutics is a vaccinated work environment where all employees are expected to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination. We will provide any accommodations as required by law.
The job details are as follows:
United Therapeutics Corporation focuses on the strength of a balanced, value-creating biotechnology model. We are confident in our future thanks to our fundamental attributes, namely our commitment to quality and innovation, the power of our brands, our entrepreneurial culture and our bioinformatics leadership. We also believe that our determination to be responsible citizens - having a positive impact on patients, the environment and society - will sustain our success in the long term.
We currently have five approved products on the market and a long-term mission of providing an unlimited supply of transplantable organs for those who need them.
Our company was founded by an entrepreneur whose daughter was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. She sought to find treatment options and a cure for her daughter and patients like her. We are founder-led, and relentless in our pursuit of “medicines for life”. We continue to research and develop treatments for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, pediatric cancers and other orphan diseases.
How you’ll contribute
The Scientist - Tissue Systems (OMG) will develop strategies to aid in cellularization of 3D printed scaffolds to generate functional tissue engineered lungs. Create, optimize, and implement analytical metrics that provide insight into the stability and function of printed scaffolding material. This scientist role will provide expertise on lung tissue engineering methodologies and techniques required to generate a cellularized 3D printed lung scaffold. This work will support the development of methods and protocols to produce cellularized 3D printed lung constructs which are suitable for pre-clinical and in vitro functional evaluation.
• Lead and contribute to efforts to create, develop, and evaluate cellularized 3D printed bioscaffolds for lung tissue engineering
• Independently and collaboratively develop experiments to support cellularization using both primary and iPSC-derived cell populations
• Implement new and use existing organ culture bioreactor systems to create functioning cellularized 3D printed lungs
• Perform cell and molecular biology assays to evaluate cellularization and vascular tissue function, scaling to clinically relevant models
• Make recommendations and set new directions for the project based on data, experimental results, and feedback from 3D printing, scaffold design, and bioink development leads
• Evaluate the vascular integrity (vascular leak, blood perfusion, etc.) of lung tissues, including native lungs, acellular lung scaffolds, and tissue engineered lung constructs
• Routinely report and present hypothesis driven experimental results, data, and plans to other team members individually and at group meetings
• Routinely maintain critical materials and reagents needed to complete assigned experiments
• Record experimental details and findings in individual and collaborative electronic notebook entries, updated at minimum on a weekly basis
• Establish and maintain a deep understanding of current and emerging technology in lung cell biology, lung physiology, bioscaffold design and lung tissue engineering
• Access and utilize primarily literature sources to support and develop experimental plans
• Routinely meet 1:1 with managers to review results and progress
• Perform other duties as assigned
For this role you will need
Minimum Requirements
• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in bioengineering/biomedical engineering, tissue engineering, vascular or cardiovascular biology, or cell biology
• 2+ years of pharmaceutical and/or academic research experience
• Experience with analytical methods of vascular or cardiovascular cell biology and function
• Experience with Histology and immunostaining, confocal microscopy, qPCR, metabolic assays, ELISAs, and Western blots
• Experience in organ culture and tissue engineering towards product development
• Experience with Aseptic Technique and mammalian cell culture, and vascular cell culture
• Knowledge of cell, extracellular niche, and biomaterials interaction
• Imaging and microscopy
• Protein and Molecular biology assays and techniques (histology, qPCR, ELISA, cytokine arrays, metabolic assays)
• Track record of success (products and/or publications) in tissue engineering, cellularization of scaffolds design for tissue engineering applications
• Strong written and verbal scientific communication/presentation skills
• Understanding of tissue engineering concepts and current field
• Experience with MS Teams, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, MS Word, Prism GraphPad, Electronic notebooks
Preferred Qualifications
• 2+ years of postdoctoral training bioengineering/biomedical engineering, tissue engineering, vascular biology, or cell biology
• 2+ years industrial experience in cell and tissue engineering applications or biological device
• Experience with biomaterials for tissue engineering applications
• Experience with iPS-derived cells
