Qualifications - Education & Experience:

  1. Must possess a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an institution with a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  2. Must possess or be eligible for a full, unrestricted Speech-Language Pathologist license issued by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Bureau of Professional Licensing (BPL).
  3. Proven experience supporting students with diverse neurodivergent needs, specifically those on the Autism Spectrum.
  4. Proficiency in implementing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools and strategies.
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct comprehensive speech, language, voice, and fluency assessments for students referred or identified for services, utilizing a variety of formal and informal tools.
  2. Interpret assessment results in determining the presence and nature of a communication disorder and its impact on the student's educational performance.
  3. Write clear, concise, and defensible evaluation reports that summarize findings, diagnostic impressions, and eligibility for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  4. Participate in Multidisciplinary Team meetings to discuss assessment results and make eligibility and placement recommendations.
  5. Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students eligible for speech-language services, establishing measurable goals and objectives.
  6. Provide direct and consultative therapy services in a variety of delivery models, including push-in (classroom-based), and small-group settings or classroom groups.
  7. Utilize evidence-based practices and culturally sensitive interventions to address articulation, phonology, expressive/receptive language, social communication (pragmatics), voice, and fluency disorders.
  8. Monitor student progress and collect data regularly to adjust intervention strategies and report on goal attainment.
  9. Collaborate with teachers and other school personnel to integrate communication goals into the classroom curriculum and environment.
  10. Ensure all practices and documentation comply with federal (IDEA), state, and district regulations and timelines, particularly regarding IEP development and implementation.
  11. Participate in IEP meetings to review student progress, present annual reviews, and plan for reevaluations.
  12. Consult regularly with parents/guardians regarding their child's progress, strategies for carryover in the home environment, and available resources.
  13. Provide training and consultation to teachers and support staff on communication development, implementing accommodations/modifications, and strategies for supporting students with communication needs.
  14. Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date case files and service logs, adhering to all privacy laws (e.g., FERPA).
  15. Maintain accurate records and maintenance of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices and other assistive technology, and train students and staff in their use.
  16. Ability to complete District Service Requests through the county for AAC devices and continuation.
  17. Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current on best practices, research, and legal developments in the field of speech-language pathology.
  18. Openly support and abide by all school policies and procedures.
  19. Maintain regular and predictable in-person attendance.

Physical, Environmental, & Stress Requirements:

  1. Ability to stand or walk for extended periods and react with agility (including running) to maintain student safety during elopement or aggressive episodes.
  2. High degree of visual acuity-including peripheral vision and depth perception-to monitor student behavior, identify environmental triggers, and ensure classroom safety. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and depth perception. The position will require work with computers and other equipment, involving repetitive hand movement and close vision.
  3. Capacity to bend, stoop, reach, and pull as required to safely implement physical crisis intervention protocols or assist students during behavioral emergencies.
  4. Ability to lift objects or provide physical support to individuals weighing between 25 to 50 pounds, following all safety and ergonomic guidelines.
  5. Capability to produce and interpret visual supports, maintain detailed electronic data charts, and manage physical records with high attention to detail.
  6. Ability to work effectively under high-stress conditions, maintaining professional composure and safety during significant behavioral challenges that may pose physical risks.
  7. This position may require the use of protective equipment and the consistent application of agency-approved crisis intervention techniques.
