As the go-to experts on all things pet health related, staff veterinarians assess the health of each animal in the shelter and provide low-cost services to community owned pets through BARC’s low-cost wellness clinic. This position will be focused on BARC’s foster and low-cost wellness clinic but may assist as needed in other shelter medical needs. This position may be for you if you feel comfortable in a public facing environment, answering questions, providing guidance to customers, has excellent computer and communication skills. Responsibilities include: Provide compassionate, quality preventive and basic care to community owned pets through BARC’s low-cost wellness clinic as well as BARC’s foster clinic. Overseeing all veterinary care during the clinic day including physical examination, diagnostics, treatment recommendations and delivery, prescribing of medications and discharge information. Diagnose and treat post-surgical medical complications. Practice Fear Free animal handling to minimize fear, anxiety and stress for pets in care. Examines animals and identifies potential ailments such as injuries, health conditions and behavior concerns. Operates large medical equipment, such as digital x-ray machine with ability to read radiographs. Give authority to euthanize animals in accordance with state laws, city ordinances and BARC policy. Participates in animal cruelty and neglect investigations by providing detailed medical evaluations or completing necropsies and testifying in court. Upholds and protects BARC’s brand standards. Assists with special projects as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS There are frequent exposures to extreme levels of temperatures, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases and substances, and/or contagious diseases or physical trauma conditions of short-term disability nature, such as broken bones or temporary loss of sight or hearing. This position requires routinely lifting or moderately heavy items, such as boxes or animals (up to 40 pounds, occasionally more).
